Bansko, Razlog & Pirin from Blagoevgrad

A full-day route from Blagoevgrad combining the historic old town of Bansko, the quieter character of Razlog and easy access to the Pirin Mountains in both winter and summer.

Bansko is about 55 km from Blagoevgrad and is one of the easiest full-day mountain trips from the city. Razlog lies in the same valley and adds a calmer town stop, while Pirin turns the route into a genuinely year-round destination: skiing in winter, hiking and mountain attractions in summer.

Bansko — more than a ski resort

Bansko developed from several neighbourhoods during the 15th–16th centuries and is first mentioned in an Ottoman register from 1576. During the Bulgarian National Revival it became an important craft, trade and cultural centre. The town is closely associated with Paisii Hilendarski, Neofit Rilski and poet Nikola Vaptsarov.

For a cultural walk, focus on the old town, the Holy Trinity Church area, the Neofit Rilski House Museum and the historic streets with their characteristic stone-and-timber houses. Allow at least 3–4 hours if you want museums, lunch and an unhurried walk rather than only the ski-zone side of Bansko.

Pirin and the ski area

Bansko is one of the main gateways to Pirin National Park, part of which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In winter the gondola and ski area are the main attraction; outside winter, the same mountain corridor gives access to Banderishka Polyana, Banderitsa, Baikushev Pine, mountain huts and hiking routes. For serious hikes towards Vihren or the high Pirin, plan separately and check the forecast, trail conditions and access.

Summer highlight: the 400-metre water slide at Banderishka Polyana

In summer Banderishka Polyana changes from a ski finish area into a mountain activity zone. The official Bansko Ski programme for summer 2026 lists a 400-metre water slide, tubing, mini golf, mini football and other outdoor attractions. The operator describes the slide as the longest of its kind in Europe.

The gondola schedule and attraction dates are seasonal, so check them shortly before travelling. For summer 2026 the official operator announced daily gondola operation during the main summer period from late June to early September, but schedules can change.

Razlog — a destination, not only a road stop

Razlog grew from the older settlement of Mehomia, which became a commercial and craft centre for the wider Razlog area during the Ottoman period. Today the town offers a noticeably quieter atmosphere than Bansko and works well for a walk through the centre, the park and the area around the historical museum.

The wide Razlog valley opens views towards Pirin, Rila and the Rhodopes. Razlog is also a practical base for Pirin Golf, the thermal-water village of Banya and the surrounding mountain villages, so it can make sense as an overnight alternative to busier Bansko.

How to plan the day

A relaxed cultural day can combine Razlog first, then Bansko old town and lunch. In winter, give priority to the ski area and avoid overloading the day with too many town stops. In summer, combine the old town with Banderishka Polyana or choose a dedicated Pirin hike. If you plan skiing, a longer mountain activity or an evening programme, staying overnight is more comfortable than returning the same day.

Organised experience

Viator currently lists an organised Pirin hiking experience that also visits Bansko. Its departure point is Sofia, so it is most useful for visitors who want a guided experience rather than as transport from Blagoevgrad. Always check the meeting point, inclusions and current availability before booking.
