Leshten, Kovachevitsa & Ognyanovo from Blagoevgrad

Stone architecture, mountain views and mineral water — three different reasons to explore the Western Rhodopes.

Leshten, Kovachevitsa and Ognyanovo combine naturally on a trip from Blagoevgrad, but each is also worth visiting on its own. Leshten and Kovachevitsa offer traditional Rhodope architecture and a slower pace, while Ognyanovo adds mineral springs, pools and the option of a longer relaxing stay.

Leshten — stone houses and panoramic views

Leshten is a small Rhodope village with restored traditional houses, narrow lanes and views across the mountain landscape. It is best enjoyed without a strict schedule — walk, take time for photos, try local food and slow down among the old houses.

The village works both as a stop of a few hours and as an overnight base. For a slower weekend, Leshten can be a base for Kovachevitsa, Ognyanovo and other places in the area.

Kovachevitsa — an architectural reserve in the Rhodopes

Kovachevitsa is known for its preserved architectural character — tall stone houses, stone roofs, narrow streets and the atmosphere of an old mountain settlement. Walking is the main experience, so comfortable shoes are important on the steep and uneven sections.

There is no need to rush the visit. Leave time for the streets, architectural details and views. Kovachevitsa combines very well with Leshten in one day, while an overnight stay allows a much slower pace.

Ognyanovo — mineral water and relaxation

Ognyanovo gives the route a different character. The village is known for its mineral water and accommodation offering mineral pools and spa facilities. This makes it a natural place to relax after a day among the stone villages or for a dedicated wellness weekend.

Ognyanovo is a practical base if you want to combine mineral pools with visits to Leshten and Kovachevitsa. Pool conditions and temperatures, opening hours and spa access vary by property, so check the details with your chosen accommodation before booking.

How to combine the three places

By car, all three destinations can be combined in one full day, but a less crowded itinerary is usually more enjoyable. For a day trip, focus on Leshten and Kovachevitsa and add Ognyanovo if time allows. For a weekend, use Ognyanovo or one of the stone villages as a base and split the visits across two days.

Before you go

Mountain and local roads take more time than main-road driving. Check the forecast and road conditions, especially in winter and bad weather. Before visiting a mineral pool, check whether it accepts day visitors or is reserved for guests of the property.
