Macedonia Square and the Gotse Delchev Monument

Blagoevgrad’s old city square and the eight-metre Gotse Delchev monument, unveiled in 1955.

Macedonia Square, also described as the “old square” in Blagoevgrad Municipality’s historical materials, is one of the recognisable public spaces in the city centre. It is home to the Gotse Delchev Monument, one of the symbols of Blagoevgrad.

The Gotse Delchev Monument

The monument was created by sculptor Krum Dermendzhiev and unveiled on 2 August 1955 following a national competition. Its total height including the pedestal is 8 metres; the figure is cast in bronze and the pedestal is granite.

The square as part of a city walk

Macedonia Square is a convenient link between the central pedestrian area and the city’s historic sights. A visit can easily be combined with Varosha, the museum, the Clock Tower and other places in the centre.

A living public space

The square continues to host official ceremonies and public events, so a visit may coincide with a temporary stage, commemoration or another city event.
